A timeless tale told in a florid bel canto style, Rossini’s take on the Cinderella story offers an ideal propellant for a virtuosic mezzo-soprano to rocket from rags to riches. But in this retelling, the supporting characters soar just as high: Cinderella’s Prince, her stepfather, and the Prince’s valet are given memorable arias, and the composer rounds out his score with ingenious ensemble flourishes. A vivacious masterpiece, La Cenerentola brings stock fairy tale characters to dazzling life.

Prince Ramiro, who is searching for a Princess, has changed places with his valet, Dandini - the better to discover the true nature of the ladies' hearts. When the Prince meets Cenerentola, there is instant attraction between them and they fall in love - while Cenerentola's stepsisters fawn over the fake prince (Dandini). Later, Alidoro, the Philosopher, takes Cenerentola (dressed in magnificent clothing) to the palace, where she enchants everyone with her beauty. Dandini (still posing as the prince) is smitten, and he tries to talk of love to Cenerentola, but she stops him, saying that she is in love with his 'valet'. Prince Ramiro (who has overheard this comment) is overjoyed, and immediately proposes to her, but she says that he must first seek her out - and then, if he still felt the same way about her, she would marry him. He says that he will follow her, but Cenerentola says he is not to do that.

La Cenerentola, ossia La bontà in trionfo (Cinderella, or Goodness Triumphant) is an operatic dramma giocoso in two acts by Gioachino Rossini. The libretto was written by Jacopo Ferretti, based on the fairy tale Cendrillon by Charles Perrault. This occasionally off-the-wall but finely sung and colourfully staged La Cenerentola was Rome Opera’s first foray into the media market, shown on television and in cinemas across Italy in 2016. It clearly had the funding. Emma Dante’s production will not have come cheap – Vanessa Sannino’s costumes are a particular feature – nor would the singers, given that this is as good a Cenerentola cast as any international house might currently muster.

This is an excellent version of one of the greatest of all comic operas, featuring superb singing and orchestral playing. And it's not just the two headliners; listen, for example, to the entrance of the stepsisters at the beginning of Act One. Nevertheless, some viewers may find the staging problematic, with singers in clown-like costumes and sets featuring human-sized rodents. Those seeking a more conventional production might want to consider the Houston Grand Opera DVD, also on Decca, with Cecilia Bartoli and Raul Jimenez. Both sets are wonderful, but, for me, Joyce Didonato and Juan Diego Florez are slightly to be preferred. Highly recommended.

Arthaus presents Rossini's popular comic opera, La Cenerentola, in a staging from the opera house in Naples. The operatic re-telling of this much loved fairy-tale centres on Cinderella's honesty and integrity, and on her willingness to forgive others, and to encourage those around her to be equally tolerant. Paul Curran's production presented to rapturous acclaim in Genoa in May 2006, finds a rather unusual setting for this moral tale. He sets the story in the year 1912, in his own words, "because I wanted to draw attention to social conflicts, and this was a period when class differences were very real".
